Youth Training Courses:
The WDRC offers strength-based training designed to provide conflict resolution, communication, problem-solving, and de-escalation skills to youth. Students learn to recognize the needs at the root of conflict, strategies for resolving conflict, individual triggers and physiological responses to anger, and practice active listening, assertive speaking, and collaboration. At the high school level, our trainings also address the social context of violence including gender expectations, stereotypes, power and control, and how to be an ally. Our trainings are designed to be flexible and adaptable to the needs of individual students. The core of our youth program is formed by the following trainings, offered in partnership with local schools, community agencies, and juvenile court.
If you are interested in hosting one of these workshops, referring a participant, or partnering with the WDRC to provide conflict resolution, mediation, or facilitation services geared toward youth, please contact Kaitlin Davis at 360-676-0122 x113
Healthy Choices for Girls
A gender-specific program for girls. We offer an elementary curriculum for 5th-6th grade girls in transition to adolescence, and a 7th-12th grade curriculum for young women. These trainings are designed to create a safe and mutually-respectful space for girls. Facilitators take a relational approach and use role plays, discussion, journaling, and other interactive techniques specifically designed for girls. Girls are empowered to co-create the workshop by creating their group agreements, generating questions, and sharing their own stories. These trainings are ideal for small groups of 8-10 girls and are led by a female facilitator.
Facing Conflict without Violence and Bridge-Builders
Class provides gender-specific training for boys in 7th-12th grade and 5th-6th grade boys respectively. This 8-hour training challenges young men and boys to examine the ways in which they currently respond to conflict, the impact of their choices on themselves and others, and explore new strategies for navigating conflict in ways that are safe and respectful of everyone. Boys are encouraged to collaborate and communicate through experiential activities that emphasize teamwork and cooperation. These trainings are ideal for small groups of 8-10 boys and are led by a male facilitator.
Dealing with Conflict
A course designed for mixed-gender groups to explore conflict together. This workshop provides students with the fundamental skills of conflict resolution and is generally presented in 2-6 hours. It is easily adapted to meet the needs of either small groups (8-12 youth) or large groups (12-30 youth), and can be presented in a classroom setting.
